1980 a British psychic is in Finland.

‘I had hardly made myself comfortable [in the bedroom], and I was certainly not asleep or even dozing, when I heard chattering all around me. There were people in the room. Perhaps, thinking I was asleep, they had come to inspect the strange creature in their midst from England. Cautiously, out of politeness rather than fear, I opened one eye slightly and I was right: there were people in the room, but they were little people, no higher than my bed. The climbed up and pushed pillows behind my back, tucking me inside the blanket like a child. I felt like Gulliver but I knew their intention was to look after me. Could these have been Lapps, I wondered? I had heard that Lapps were not very tall but these people were tiny, like midgets. As suddenly as they had come, they went. The chattering ceased and there was total silence. I drifted off to sleep. I woke up at about three o’clock in the afternoon. Only the lady was in the house I could not question her. So I washed, dressed and started preparing for the evening meeting while I awaited the return of my interpreter. When I told him what had happened and asked him who the little people were, he looked at me nonplussed. He spoke to me hostess and then said simply that she had told him that nobody had been in the flat. There was something strange in his expression and I decided not to pursue the matter because they obviously did not seem to know what I was talking about.

The meeting was a great success and the following day I travelled to Tampere, where I met the man who was to return with me to Helsinki and act as interpreter for three days. He had taught as London University and spoke impeccable English but he said he thought he might find his job difficult since he knew nothing about my work. I told him not to worry, and to reassure him I also told him a great deal about himself, which appeared to amaze him. We went for a walk in the countryside the following day, and I related my experience in Rovaniemi. I expected him to laugh when I spoke of the little people, and his reaction surprised me. ‘Yes’ he said, ‘I fully understand’.

‘You believe what I’ve told you?’

‘Of course I do’ was his reply. ‘You are in the land of the trolls.’

I am not sure that I knew at the time what a troll was. I had some vague idea that it was the name given to the toy mascots that some people hang in the windows of their cars, and I knew nothing of the friendly but impish dwarfs of Scandinavia mythology.

‘You are in the land of the spirit people’ my informant continued, and he told me that when he went fishing for two or three days, he never locked his car as he did in town. He would talk to the trolls and seek their protection for his car. He himself believed that they existed in the mountains, and he told me about the place nick-named Father Christmas Mountain, which many people in the area believe is where the trolls live. The Lapps, he said, certainly believe in the little people.

The psychic went on to describe childhood experiences with fairies.

Even had I not seen them I would have had not difficulty in accepting their reality. As a child I was always very drawn to the garden and particularly to plants; in fact I still am. I would play in the garden for hours and I regularly saw little creatures of not more than two or three inches high, on the branches of trees. They were not much bigger than long butterflies and I used to talk to them, thinking they were fairies. When I first told my mother, she entered into the spirit of things by pointing and saying, ‘That’s where Tom Thumb lives,’ and I used to say that I was going into the garden to see Tom Thumb. So I would probably not have found it too difficult to believe in the trolls if someone else had told me about them and I had not seen them myself. My fairies may have been a product of my childish imagination, although I do not for a moment think so; but in any case the fact that I have not seen them since I was a child does not necessarily mean that they do not exist. Myth is often based on truth.

It may be thought that although I knew nothing about the trolls before my experience with them, they came into my mind psychically and that I imagined the whole episode. Being sensitive to atmosphere and being in a place where their existence was legendary, they might well have come into my mind. This of course is true, but I can only say that I am convinced that the trolls were actually there in my room and that I both saw and heard them.
